Highlights
Overview
Hosts Belgium finished second in Pool B on a record of four victories and one defeat. As a team, they have scored the most blocking points of the pool stage, together with Russia, 51 each. Individually, their captain Sam Deroo has not only been a great leader for his teammates and an inspiration to the home crowd on the stands, but also a consistent performer and the team’s best point-maker himself. Ukraine come into this match as the third-placed team in Pool D, where they claimed three wins and conceited two losses. Among the players to watch are Oleh Plotnytskyi, the tournament’s fourth best server with 12 aces to his name, Yurii Semeniuk, EuroVolley’s third best blocker and seventh most efficient spiker so far, and Dmytro Viietskyi, the team’s best scorer. The winner of this match will meet the winner of the match between Serbia and Czech Republic in a quarterfinal clash on September 24, again in Antwerp.

• Belgium (W4-L1) can claim more than four wins in a single edition of the European Championship for the second time after 1967 (W6-L4).
• Sam Deroo (76) is Belgium's leading scorer in this year's European Championship. In the 2017 edition, only Deroo himself finished on more points for Belgium (87).
• Stijn D'Hulst was in the top-5 of best setters at this year's group stage on an setter efficiency of 55%.
Ukraine
• Ukraine's best result in the European Championship is a sixth place in 1993.
• Ukraine have won three of their five group stage matches, losing in straight sets against the Netherlands and Poland.
• Ukraine can win more than three matches in a single European Championship for the third time, after 1993 (4) and 1997 (4).
• Ukraine could suffer back-to-back straight set European Championship defeats for the first time since 2005, when they lost against Russia and Italy in the group stage.
• Only Nimir Abel-Aziz (24) from the Netherlands and Czech Republic's Jan Hadrava (21) scored more aces in this year's group stage than Oleh Plotnytskyi (12). Russia's Dmitrii Volkov also scored 12 aces.
• Dmytro Viietskyi was Ukraine's top scorer in the group stage on 64 points, three more than Plotnytskyi (61).

Brecht Van Kerckhove“I don’t know what happened to my team. According to the rankings, we were the favourites. And after our miraculous comeback in set two and a very strong third set, we had everything under control. And we had the crowd behind us. Yet, my team started doubting and I don’t know why. This loss is a big disappointment of course.”
Coach of Belgium
Oleh Plotnytskyi“We did not play our level in serving and attack, but our fighting spirit came to the rescue. That’s the main reason for our victory.”
