Match Report

Croatia emerge victorious, Estonia claim historic set

Article 24 August 2019

The first official match-up between Croatia and Estonia turned out to be an interesting game. Estonia opened the game very well, however after 15-15 Croatian serve and block made the difference. In the second part Croatia had 23-9 lead, Estonia fought back to 24-17. Croatia’s main star Samanta FABRIS was substituted off at 13-4. In the third set Estonia took a lead in the early stage, but in the decisive part it became a fierce battle. Eventually, Estonia saved two match points and with ace from Julija MONNAKMAE closed this part winning the first set in their debut at the EuroVolley. Kertu LAAK (EST) managed to score nine points in this set in front of almost 200 Estonian fans who cheered for the rookie team. It was like a cold shower for Croatia who took the last part earning the victory. Samanta FABRIS (CRO) was the best scorer with 14 points, one less got Kertu LAAK (EST).

Day 2 Recap

Play

"We didn't start very well, but when we won first two sets, I tried to change some players and mix the team. We lost the third, but I'm happy that we won the game. We have to find balance for the next match.”

Daniele SANTARELLI
head coach of Croatia

Lucija MLINAR, outside hitter of Croatia:

"In the Eurovolley you always have to give your maximum. We lost our patience in the third set, but in the end everything is good because we won."

"I'm not happy, because we lost again, but I feel much better than yesterday evening. Our serves were more aggressive, our defense also improved a lot. We are on the right way, but we have to correct our mistakes. Croatia deserved the victory, and we deserved to win a set."

Andrei OJAMETS
head coach of Estonia

Kertu LAAK, opposite of Estonia:

"We have a lot of fans in Budapest, and our goal was to make them proud and happy. We managed to being tough until the end of the game, and I think we did our best. Yesterday we were a little bit nervous, but we improved a lot, and today we were able to win a tight set."
