The Netherlands
After the disappointing 2017 edition of EuroVolley, when the Dutchmen did not survive the group stage, the team now coached by Italian Roberto Piazza have set their eyes on reaching at least the quarterfinals, which will be played in their own country, and more specifically in Apeldoorn.
Gijs Jorna“We have seen the Dutch women playing in Rotterdam Ahoy in 2015 when they won silver in EuroVolley at home in front of almost 11,000 people. We are hoping for a magical moment like that. This will be a unique experience for us and an additional reason for us to pull out all the stops this summer.”
Outside Hitter for The Netherlands
For the third time in history, the Netherlands will host a European Championship. Back in 1985, the team ended in tenth place only, while in 1997 the ‘Lange Mannen’ became champions of Europe following their amazing feat of winning gold in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. In the two editions previous to that (1993 and 1995) the Dutch lost the final to arch rival Italy. In the run up to the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, where the ‘Oranjes’ won silver, the team from the Netherlands won a bronze medal twice (1989 and 1991).
