Match Report

Poland knocked out Spain in road to Quarter Finals

Article

Poland showed tonight that they are one of the best teams in Europe. With consistency and team spirit the gave Spain a hard time in a full Atlas Arena. The Poles started the first set with a power block from Stysiak, but had severe problems in reception with only 18% success. An impressive back pipe from Rivero (SPA) at 19-16 in first set made Spain came closer to Poland.

In the second set, Spain took the lead and Poland couldn't get in touch until 9 - 9 and 20 minutes later, spain remained in the lead until 19-19 when Poland put in an extra gear an won the set comfortable.

Some great attacks from Segura and Escamilla couldn't save Spain from a strong Polish team. An impressive back spike from Styziak at 5-3 was crucial for the third set including speed balls from the setter Wolosz which made the biggest difference between the teams today.

Poland and Germany will meet in the Quarter Finals in Łódź on Wednesday 8.30 PM. Italy ready for Russia at 6 PM the same day.

Eighth-Finals Recap

Play

"It was the first "do or die" game in this tournament so the emotions were completely different. The Spanish team showed some incredible defense and had some risky service. I'm glad we managed to be calm today and did what we were supposed to do - got a 3-0 win"

Joanna Wołosz
setter of Poland

"We are way shorter than the Polish players and we are not as physically strong yet so it takes a lot of power in defence to play close sets with a top team like Poland. Therefore, I can say I'm glad we presented some good rallys and real involvement. We learned how to play like a team at this Eurovolley and it can only pay off in the future"

Jessica Rivero
outside-hitter of Spain
