Match Report

Bulgaria celebrate their first victory to stay ‘alive’ in the tournament

Article

With no other option than a win, Bulgaria secured their first EuroVolley 2019 victory in four matches to stay in contention for a spot in the elimination round. The Lionesses recorded as many as 15 blocks, more than double the figure registered by Greece in this aspect of the game. Moreover, Bulgaria achieved a 46% success rate in attack. Interestingly, there was only one ace in this match, scored by Konstantina Vlachaki of Greece.

Greece’s win-loss record stands at 2-2 so far, with the Hellenic team sitting in third place in the current standing of Pool A. Bulgaria follows in fourth, and they will fight with Finland and France for a spot in the next round.

It was a relatively weak and disappointing performance from Greece, even though their star players Anthi Vasilantonaki and Olga Strantzali scored 19 and 11 points, respectively.

Day 5 Recap

Play

“I do not think we did anything different than in the other games. I was happy with our performance against Turkey and Serbia, but the mistakes we made at the crucial moments decided the eventual score. Our defeat to France demoralised the team but right now, I am thinking of taking the next match and finishing third in the group. We have a goal for now. We have a chance to finish this phase in third place. We want to rest before the Finland game and go into the second round with a good win.”

Ivan Petkov
Head coach of Bulgaria

Guillermo Naranjo Hernandez, coach of Greece: “We had a game plan, but it turns out it was not the best. We were hitting too much diagonally with the high ball. They have tall middle blockers, and we had a hard time to pass the block. They were also very good in defence, so it was very hard for us to score.

Making it to the next round is already a success for us because this is the top 16 teams of Europe. For us this is the biggest success we could have imagined. There is a battle in the pool, depending on the result of Bulgaria against Finland. We will see. For sure even being fourth does not change much, because you face the best teams in Europe. I guess we will play without pressure in the next round, just enjoy the experience and have fun.”
