Match Report

Serbia rout Greece to record fourth straight win

Article

Titleholders Serbia keep a clean record in the competition with four wins in as many matches to cement their first place in the pool with maximum 12 points. Serbia’s superstar Tijana Boskovic scored 20 points to edge Greece’s Anthi Vasilantonaki by three in a direct duel featuring the respective opposite hitters. It was the first match between these teams since a European League fixture held back in July 2011 in Chania, where Serbia won 3-0 as well.

Despite the absence of their team captain Maja Ognjenovic, who did not play at all, Serbia looked solid as a rock. Maja Aleksic recorded as many as six blocks on her own – whilst Greece had only three stuffs overall. Serbia’s attacking performance was extremely good as well, with a 60% success rate.

Despite losing two matches in a row, Greece have already secured their spot in the next round – a real achievement to go with their comeback to the EuroVolley stage after 18 years.

Day 6 Recap

Play

“I am very happy with being here and playing at EuroVolley. This is my first participation in this tournament. It is amazing to play with this group. I can say that we have great players on every position. I will give my best for my team. Tomorrow, we will face Turkey. Turkey is one of the best teams in our group. I expect a good game and I hope we will be the eventual winners.”

Maja Aleksic
Player of Serbia

Styliani Christodoulou, captain of Greece: “The game was exactly the way we expected it to be. Serbia is an incredibly good team, one of the best teams in the world. We tried to play good and enjoy every moment of this match because for us, it was important to play with this elite team. I think we made a good effort against Serbia. The result is okay, it is what we were expecting.

The two wins against France and Finland were extremely good for us and qualifying for the next round is a huge boost of confidence. We are waiting to know the name of our next opponent. We want to enjoy every moment because for us it is important to be playing here. We have a good team and we have a good chemistry in the group.”
