Overview

Co-hosting the event for the first time, Hungary continue their historic EuroVolley campaign on home soil against old rival Romania. Hungary and Romania have faced each other six times in five years with the Hungarians emerging victorious only once – however with that victory they qualified for EuroVolley 2017 winning the golden set.
This is the third consecutive EuroVolley appearance for Hungary after reaching 12th and 15th place in 2015 and 2017 respectively. Their best result is silver back in 1975. Romania have 24 EuroVolley appearances and collected the bronze medal in 1963.

Romania upset the home crowd in Papp László Sportaréna

Article 24 August 2019

The battle between Hungary and Romania gathered more 3000 fans. In the opening part the Hungarian team made 10 mistakes, once Romania only 4. Both coaches used the challenge system at a crucial point of the second set (21-20), after almost 5 minutes Hungary got the point and they equalised. Anett NÉMETH and Adelina BUDAI-UNGUREANU had outstanding performances, both of them tallied more than 15 points after first three sets. In the end of third set Hungary saved two set points with the spikes from Gréta SZAKMÁRY, but Romania closed this set on their favour. The Hungarian team opened the fourth set with powerful display but after leading 8-4, Romania bounced back jumping to 15-10. They kept a five-point lead till the end of the set, Hungary saved 2 match points, but it was not enough to stop Romania. Anett NEMETH (HUN) scored match-high 26 points, once Adelina BUDAI-UNGUREANU 21.

Day 2 Recap

Play

"3000 spectators gave the rhythm of the game, it was a volleyball show tonight, not only a volleyball game. After we lost the second set, we started to play as a team, and our offense improved a lot. Our goal is to reach the eighth-finals, tonight we got a little bit closer to achieve this."

Diana Lorena BALINTONI
Setter of Romania

Adelina BUDAI-UNGUREANU, outside spiker of Romania:

"It was fantastic to play in this athmosphere, even though that they were only screaming and cheering for Hungary. It was a really entertaining game, both teams were so
motivated. We moved better in defense than the Hungarians, and our spike was on fire tonight."

"First of all, I would like to say thank you for all the fans in the arena. The young Hungarian players were under pressure, we could play how we have planned. Our reception was much better than yesterday, and made less mistake than our opponent."

Luciano PEDULLA
head coach of Romania

Jan DE BRANDT, head coach of Hungary:

"We don't have strong and tall attackers, so we have to win these games 'under the net'. Today we made too many direct mistakes with serve and reception. Romanian team has more experienced payers than us, in key moments this was decisive. We have 3 points from two games, now we have to beat Azerbaijan and/or Croatia. I know my team, they are able to do that."

"We were prepared that they will start strong, but in my opinion we didn't hava the rythm what we should. Maybe we didn't have enough time to prepare against Romania, so we will use our rest day on Sunday to prepare against Azerbaijan."
