Match Report

Azerbaijan win a nail-biting five-setter with Estonia

Article 28 August 2019

The encounter between Azerbaijan and Estonia turned out to be an extremely intense and thrilling battle. With their victory, the team led by Giovanni CAPRARA, secured a ticket to the EuroVolley 1/8 finals, however Estonia deserved a huge applause in Budapest.

During most of the time in the first set, Azerbaijan stayed ahead, however they needed four set points to finally close the set.

In the second set, Estonia jumped from 9-9 to 16-10, showing their best in all elements. During this part Azerbaijan gave away 11 points through their own mistakes.

In the first two sets Liis KULLERKANN was the main strength for Estonia, but then she lost her power. Fortunately, Kertu LAAK stepped up to the mark and earned 8 points, but it was not enough having Polina RAHIMOVA who had spreaded her wings on the other side of the net. From 19-19 she scored 4 points in a row and during the entire set - 10!

In the fourth, Estonia didn’t give up, they fought really hard, showing lot of great defences. The most epic rally was at 16-11 which also delivered the point to Estonia. They improved the score to 20-12 and then closed the set gaining their first point ever in the history of EuroVolley.

The fifth set was a close battle. Estonia led 8-7 lead, but the Azerbaijani turned the decisive part to their favour with some outstanding services. Polina RAHIMOVA was the best scorer with 27 points, on the other side of the net Kertu LAAK tallied 24.

Day 6 Recap

Play

“It was a hard game, we were little bit relaxed and we were thinking it will be an easy game, so coach put the second six for court to play. We have to be strong together, we prepared for the next opponent and for play-offs. We didn’t respect enough our opponent so next time we have to be more respectful. It was a though game, we made many mistakes, I hope tomorrow it will be easier and we can keep our energy for the next stage.”

Polina RAHIMOVA
opposite of Azerbaijan

Andre OJAMETS, head coach of Estonia:

“It was our last match in the European Championship, that was the last chance to show how can we play. We fought till the end, but the quality of Rahimova was too much today. I'm very proud of my girls, that was our best game in the tournament."

Kertu LAAK, opposite of Estonia:

“I think we gave out everything today and we didn't leave anything in our back-pocket. That was what we wanted on our last game. Everybody gave the maximum. Thanks everything for our fans and for everybody.”
