Match Report

SWITZERLAND v ALBANIA

Article

Albania challenged Switzerland in the first set, going into the buisness end with a three-point lead at 20-23. And though Switzerland made a 4-0 run and were first to reach set point, Albania brought it home on their own second try, relying a lot on a total of 12 Swiss unforced errors in this set alone.

It was deja vu from the previous night's third set for Albania against Slovakia with an exact carbon copy of the end of the set.

But this was about the extent of Albania's resistance as Switzerland quickly bounced back to take the next three with relative ease, despite a last-ditch attempt by Albania at the end of the fourth.

Luca Ulrich scored 24 points for Switzerland, including five blocks and 64% (18/28) in attack, but Anton Qafarena produced the match high of 25.

The result sees Switzerland climb back to second place in the final standings of the pool, leaving Romania in third place despite their win earlier over pool leaders Slovakia. Albania finished last in the pool, winless after six matches.

Ivo Casac, Portugal libero: "It was a great way to finish the qualifiers. We came into the match to try to win and make it six out of six and we managed to do it. I think we played better than Hungary - we were playing to make it six out of six and they were playing just to play another game."

Robert Koch, Hungary head coach: "Actually, our goal was to improve ourselves. It was very important for us because I have a young team and we have a lot of injuries, so what I wanted, we did it. We made a big progress in the two tournaments and improved a lot of technical and tactical things, but the guys need to understand that the most important thing is speed, which we currently lack."
