Overview

Ukraine and Belgium along with Portugal and Greece are still in the quest for two remaining tickets to the next phase, as Poland and Serbia already secured their spots. Therefore, we can expect an extremely fierce battle in this encounter. So far, Ukraine has a better record (2W-1L) than Belgium (1W-2L), having a chance to earn qualification to the eight finals already on Tuesday by winning this matchup. But you cannot underestimate Belgium, who showed their strength in the clash against Poland - they lost in straight sets, but they challenged the hosts.

Match Report

Ukraine secure third, Belgium out

Article

It was All or Nothing today for Belgium.  They entered court knowing they needed to win to advance to the 1/8 finals which will take place later this week in the ERGO Arena in Gdańsk.  With two wins, Ukraine were more comfortable but a third would secure third spot in the pool – with one game still to play against the co-hosts Poland.

The first set started with Belgium securing a four point advantage, what caused an immediate reaction of Ukraine’s coach, Ugis Krastins, who requested a time-out.  Ukraine tied the match shortly after and had a strong will to win, taking the lead 20-19.  However they were finally defeated by the Belgian players with a kill block (27-25).

The Ukrainians got irritated after the opening set loss and left all of their hearts on the court, which resulted in them gaining a five-point advantage (13-8). Belgium refused to give up and got very close, but in the end were conquered (23-25).

The third set was fully in Ukraine’s control, who had built a safe advantage (18-12) and easily drove it until the end with the help of best scorer Oleh Płotnycki (22 points in total in the match).

The level of the fourth was quite uneven, firstly it started with a 4 point advantage for Ukraine, a few moments after Belgium managed to take the lead. After a truly tough and tired battle, it was Ukraine who scored the last point and became the winner (25-23).

"I think it was our best match at this European Championship and we played like one team from the first point to the last one. It was a difficult match for us, we played two five-setters and lost against Serbia in straight sets but today's win is good for our mentality as we got first three points, so we go to the play-offs in good mood."

Oleh Plotnytskyi
captain of Ukraine

"What I can say they were better than us today, small details but we were not good enough."

Sam Deroo
captain of Belgium
