Match Report

Impeccable, Greece finish the first Qualifier tournament without a set lost

Article

Greece continued their domination in Pool C as on Sunday they stormed out for a straight-sets victory over the team of Austria.  The Greek players now lead head-to-head versus their Austrian opponents 19-5 as Greece have not lost to Austria since a friendly match 20 years ago, in 2001.

The top scorer Anthi Vasilantonaki and her teammates didn't leave any chances to the Austrian players finishing with 40 winning spikes (compared to 19 by Austria) and scoring as many as 9 aces. In the match that lasted only 68 minutes, the Greek players, who were celebrating Mother's Day with their mothers' initials on their arms, outperformed the opponent in all the components and finish on the top of the current standing in Pool C, without having lost a single set in this first tournament. Matches in the group will resume on May 13, in Graz (AUT).

  • Greece took a comfortable lead in the beginning of the match as Austria put only a little pressure on their opponents. Anthi Vasilantonaki leading comfortably, 16-9; 14 winning spikes, Anthi was sharp in the attacks.
  • The players around head coach Guillermo Naranjo Hernandez controlled completely the game in the second set recording a 13-0 run from 7-4 to 20-4.
  • Austria were showing some better skills in the third set but with Greece leading 19-14 in the third set, Austria's Nina Nesimovic (who had only entered the match in the third set) suffered a knee injury on landing after an attack and will be assessed by the medical staff.
  • Vasilantonaki became top scorer with 18 points, while Olga Strantzali added 13 for her team's win.

Jan de Brandt, head coach Austria:
"To beat a team like Greece you need to serve like hell. Unfortunately we didn't have that - but Greece did. Now, back home in Austria, we have to face our main opponent which is Spain and in order to qualify we need to beat them 3-0 or 3-1."

Guillermo Naranjo, head coach Greece:
"I'm very satisfied with my players during these three games. It was very hard to keep our concentration on a high level and my players should be congratulated for their performance. All we have to do now in the second leg in Graz next week is repeat the same thing we did in Larissa."
