European Golden League winners Bulgaria will have the benefit of playing at their home court in Plovdiv and will be looking for a third medal as hosts, repeating what they did in 1981 (gold) and 2001 (bronze). With a full line-up that features players like team captain Elitsa Vasileva, star libero and Golden League’s Most Valuable Player Zhana Todorova and setter Petya Barakova, it might be hard to bet against the Bulgarians.

Greece is the team with the fewest amount of experience and success in the EuroVolley. Set to make just their sixth appearance among the top teams of the continent, the Greek are still in the early stages of a process that will hopefully take them to the elite of international volleyball.

Match Report

Bulgaria leave no doubts in their first match

Article 18 August 2021

Supported by thousands of fans in Plovdiv Bulgaria defeated Greece in the opening match in Kolodruma Sport Hall.

The game started in a competitive way with the team of Greece slightly being the leading one on the court. Bulgaria managed to overcome the though situation showing significant dominance after 12-12  and soon jumped to 17-12. Led by their captain Elitsa Vasileva who scored 8 points in the opening set , the co-host finished it in their favour - 25-20.

Vasileva and her teammates kept with the steady performance pushing hard on the attack in the second set achieving 44% efficiency on the winning spikes. It was again the Bulgarian captain who took the responsibility and put the end of the set with a great spike for 25-15.

The third set started in a head to head way but again the lionesses were the ones who took control in the deciding moments and congratulated themselves with the first Euro Volley 2021 win after 25-19.

Bulgarian Elitsa Vasileva was the top scorer of the match with 19 points while Anthi Vasilantonaki achieved 14 for Greece.

Elitsa Vasileva, Bulgaria Outside Spiker: “Before the match, we spoke about the importance of remaining concentrated, and I am happy that we could show our game. We are very much thankful to all the fans that come here to support us. Now, we have two days before the next game against Spain. We will try to rest and prepare well.”

Ivan Petkov, Bulgaria Coach: "We are satisfied with the win. The most important thing in such tournaments is to win against every team. I can not say that we did not expect the victory. We were extremely well prepared for the match."

Aikaterina Giota, Greece Middle Blocker: "It is always stressful to play in the opener. I think we didn't play our best. We started the match  well but we lost our confidence. Hopefully, we will show much more of our game in the upcoming games. The atmosphere was great,  the court was really beautiful. It is nice to perform in front of the fans again.

Hernandez G Naranjo, Greece Coach: "We made a lot of mistakes. Bulgaria is a really good team and when you make a mistake you need to quickly get back in the game because their lead increases significantly.  The team of Bulgaria is very well-prepared and it was really hard for us to fight their playing system."
