Match Report

Czech Republic beat Greece to cut off their next round chances

Article

Czech Republic took an important step towards qualifying for the next round of #EuroVolleyW 2021 after a 3-0 win over Greece. With 4 losses in Pool B, Hellas has no more chances to get into the next stage.

⦁ A cat-and-mouse game put the start of the match with both teams showing equal skills on most of the components. Still, Czech Republic delivered better in attack. 11 winning spikes by Gabriela Orvosova out of 18 Czech ones, turned to be the key to the success in the first set.

⦁ Greece wasted a great opportunity to get back in the match while leading 24-22 in the second set. Ace by Eva Hodanova at 23-24 tie the score and gave Czechia the motivation for saving one more set-point. Although they also did not take the first winning chance at 26-25, at the end celebrated again.

⦁ Considering its start, the third set also seemed to be as competitive as the previous two. However, from 6-6, the match went in one direction only, and again with better-attacking performance (50% on winning spikes) Czech Republic inched their first 3-0 win at #EuroVolleyW 2021.

⦁ Gabriela Orvosova led all scorers for the win with a match-high 22 points. Martha Evdokia Anthouli followed her, finishing with 15 points for Greece.

“It was very emotional for me today to coach against my home country. But once the national anthem ended the only thing in my mind was how to help the Czech Republic to win. We played really bad in the first two sets. The level of the game was not high because for both teams it was like a final. We stayed strong mentally and served aggressive in the difficult moments. Congratulations to all the girls, we are very happy to achieve this second win.”

Ioannis Athanasopolous
Head coach, Czech Republic

"It was a bad day. We could've done better. We were very excited to win but unfortunately we didn`t achieve it. Now we have one more game left."
