It is the Big Match of the Day in Pool B. Poland and Bulgaria lock horns in a clash for the first place in the group.

It looks like that the Polish are in a better position, as they are the only unbeaten team in the group. Bulgaria, on the hand, have lost to Germany after a hard-fought five-setter.

The Polish count on great opposites, Magdalena Stysiak and captain Malwina Smarzek, who both have been impeccable so far in the competition. The Bulgarian Lionesses' power lies in the hand of opposite Emiliya Dimitrova. Middle blockers, Hristina Vuchkova and Nasya Dimitrova have also been key players for their team so far.

Match Report

Bulgaria tops Pool B after a come-from-behind victory over Poland

Article 25 August 2021

Bulgaria clinched top spot in Pool B after a dramatic come-from-behind 3-1 victory over Poland. Needing all three match points to secure the first place the home team found its way after losing the opening set to the delight of nearly 3000 fans at the Kolodruma Hall.

● Poland jumped to a quick 8-3 lead in the first set thanks to devastating blocks by Kladia Alagierska (2) and Magdalena Stysiak. The difference only grew up from that point. The visitors had the incredible 60% kill rate in attack while committing just four errors for the duration of the set.

● The Lionesses managed to slow down Stysiak in the second set, limiting the Polish opposite to the paltry 11% kill rate and prompting her substitution. The home team went on a 9-1 run effectively killing the intrigue.

● Stysiak came back to start the third set but her effectiveness was still a big issue. Bulgarians came back from an early three-point deficit to tie the set at 18-18. A couple of errors by Stysiak in the clutch moments killed Polish hopes. Emiliya Dimitrova had an excellent set finishing with 8 points (6-of-11 in attack, a block and an ace).

●Neither team led by more than two points until Bulgaria went on an 8-1 run starting at 15-14. Still The Lionesses needed five tries to close out the match. After three unsuccessful attacks by Nasya Dimitrova it was her block that capped off the remarkable comeback.

●Emiliya Dimitrova played her best match of the tournament finishing with 24 points. Elitsa Vasileva added 21 while despite her struggles throughout the evening Stysiak was Poland’s top scorer with 15.

“We started with a lot of serve errors and couldn’t organize our attack. After the first set the serve got better and it helped us on block and defense. The first place in Pool B doesn’t mean much. We just did the first part of our job but the most important matches are still ahead. We have two days to prepare for Sweden, we know nothing about them. But the most important thing is, and I remind this to our players before every single match, to make our fans happy and have fun on the court.”

Ivan Petkov
Head coach, Bulgaria

"We played as a team today. We fought hard for every ball! It was tough but the team spirit won this match. We knew that we had to improve our performance after the first set. We did it and we won. There are no more easy matches onward. When you win, you progress. When you lose, you go home. We will give our best to perform even better and to keep on winning."

Emiliya Dimitrova
Opposite, Bulgaria

“We won with team spirit and self-giving overcoming the problems before and during the match. Keeping in mind the level of our opponents I think we played pretty well. I’m happy we won especially with a result that allowed us to finish top of the pool. Germany, Poland and Bulgaria are three teams on a same level. After the loss to Germany we couldn’t lose again. We owed it to the fans that are always with us and I’m happy that we brought them joy.”

Nasya Dimitrova
Middle blocker, Bulgaria

"First, I would like to congratulate the team of Bulgaria. They did a great job as did we but only in the first set. Afterwards, we started making a lot of mistakes and Bulgaria just took advantage. In general, they were better than us today, especially with the atmosphere created by their fans. For sure, it will be harder for us from now on as the second-placed team but we'll forget about today and we will be focusing only on the next matches."

Malwina Smarzek
Captain, Poland

"Bulgaria celebrated today as their team won. I think we started well but after that Bulgaria took control of the match. They pushed us with serve and were better on block and in defense and serve. Now, we are thinking only about our next match against Ukraine."

Jacek Nawrocki
Head coach, Poland
