Overview

A clash of the EuroVolley 2019 co-hosts, as both Slovakia and Hungary organised the previous edition in Bratislava and Budapest, respectively. This 2021 edition is only 5th appearance for Slovakia and their best result so far is 12th place achieved in 2003 and 2017. The previous campaign was not as successful as expected for Hungary, because they finished 20th, but they still hope to remind their glory times from 70s and 80s when they won one silver and bronze medals at EuroVolley.

Match Report

Hungary edge Slovakia in Central-European derby

Article 20 August 2021

A game full of long points, good serves and reception, great defence, but not so strong attacks. Every set was a close and long battle. The first one, which ended 25-20 for Hungary, lasted 31 minutes. The second one, which Hungary won 25-23, lasted for 34 minutes! An exhausting fight between two rivals, both organisers of the last edition in 2019, each one very eager to secure a victory at the beginning of the European Championship. Slovakia ended up 12th in 2019, leaving Hungary further behind, down in 20th place. Their last encounter two years ago lasted five sets with Hungary winning in the end 3-2.

In the first set, Hungary led from the very beginning and kept the advantage, while in the second one Slovakia was leading all the way up to 18-18, when the Hungarian girls intensified their attack and in the end finished the set with two straight points for 25-23. This match simply could not have finished in three sets. The third one went to Slovakia with 25-20, but Hungary won the fourth one, mostly because their bench was longer and they managed to keep their strength right until the end, thanks to their rotations. The fourth set ended in a 25-18 win for Hungary to seal an overall 3-1 victory, with Anett Nemeth and Gréta Szakmary top scoring with 19 points apiece.

This is a great start and we are extremely happy with this victory, especially since Slovakia have a very good team. A lot has changed since the EuroVolley 2019 in Budapest: the coaching staff and many players – there has been an injection of young and fresh blood and at the same time we have a group with more experience from international competitions as well. It was great to play in front of this small group of Hungarian friends – they were noisy and passionate and we could feel their energy.

Anett Nemeth
opposite of Hungary

For sure, we did imagine a different result and we wanted to win but Hungary played very well, especially with their block and defence – whilst we had problems in attack and we could sometimes not find a solution to our problems. It is a tough loss for us but we have another four matches and we look forward to the remainder of the tournament – where we will be trying to do our best.
