Match Report

Gutsy Switzerland edge Hungary at tiebreak

Article 21 August 2021

According to the latest CEV ranking, Hungary were the favourites of this fixture – as they currently sit in 17th place, with Switzerland further down in 24th. However, this gap was not that evident in this match. This was rather a battle between equal opponents, with a good defence game and long rallies. In the end, after five long sets and 140 minutes, Switzerland won 3-2.

In the first set, Switzerland were leading 13-9, but Hungary caught up with them at 14-14 and in the end won the set 25-22. The second set started great for Hungary, as they edged ahead at 7-2 and 13-8, but then Swiss coach Saskia van Hintum decided to make some changes, which proved to be crucial. In place of starting setter Oriane Hämmerli, Méline Pierret joined the action with Hungary leading 16-9. The Hungarian girls relaxed a bit, while the change motivated the Swiss side. Although the Hungarians were still ahead at 23-21, the final result of the second set was 25-23 for Switzerland.

Winning the second set gave the Swiss girls additional adrenaline and they managed to finish the hard and long third set 29-27 also in their favour. However, Hungary was not ready to be defeated. They fought back and they won the fourth set 25-23 even after wasting a 22-16 advantage.

The fifth set was a reflection of the previous ones. Hungary started with a 3-1 run, but then the Swiss had a series of seven points in a row, for 8-3 at the side switch. The Hungarians got a bit closer (8-10), but Switzerland managed to keep the advantage and won the fifth set 15-11 to celebrate their first victory in Zadar.

“I am just so happy with the way we fought until the end, we did believe in ourselves and in our chances even when we were trailing behind. Two years ago in Bratislava we beat Belarus and this time we came here knowing that we have the level required to beat some of the teams in our pool. We have a mission to accomplish – which is to make it out of the pool stage and move on to the next round in Belgrade. This is the first step to get there.”

Laura Künzler
Captain of Switzerland

"Unfortunately, it wasn't enough today, but at least we took one point. Obviously, I'm a little bit disappointed, because we could win this match, but we took one point and we still have three matches and we know our goals. First, business and then pleasure. We had a chance to play together more today, but on the other hand, we have three games in a row, so it's difficult to be in a shape every day, but just let's keep going and we will see."

Greta Szakmary
captain of Hungary
