Overview

Switzerland will aim to keep the momentum from their previous match at ŠC Višnjik - Dvorana Krešimir Ćosić. On Saturday they won a rollercoaster five-setter with Hungary and will definitely look for their chance also in the encounter with Belarus after one day of rest. Also Belarus had an opportunity to recover on Sunday after suffering two defeats from the strongest teams in Pool C - Italy and Croatia. Switzerland and Belarus will definitely fight hard in this game, as this victory can be a bargaining card in the pool standings. The teams locked horns earlier this year twice - as they competed in the same pool during EuroVolley Qualifiers, both fixtures were won by Belarus (3-0 and 3-1).

Match Report

Belarus thump Switzerland in one-sided affair

Article 23 August 2021

After two losses at the beginning of the European Championship to Croatia and Italy, Belarus had to win their third game, if they were to continue their journey towards the next stage of the competition. In the third game in Pool C, they played Switzerland, who had lost against Croatia (0-3) in the first match of the group but won against Hungary (3-2).

Belarus were the favourites here, as they showed right from the start. They had an advantage of two to three points through the whole opening set and eventually won it 25-23. They had an even better situation in the second one. Point-wise, they stormed to a massive 19-12 lead, then 22-13 and finished with a landslide 25-15 score. It was a fight between two different volleyball schools. It is worth mentioning that in the first two sets the Belarus girls made as many as nine points by direct serves, while the Swiss girls did not score any aces during those game segments.

In the final, third set, Belarus showed they would stay in control against any potential threats. They made it very clear they had no intention of losing the set, pushed it even harder and finished it 25-15 for a comprehensive 3-0 victory powered by Hanna Klimets with a personal tally of as many as 23 points.

“We lost two matches in a row at the beginning of the tournament, but yesterday we had a rest day and we used it as an opportunity to analyse what we had been doing right and what had gone wrong in order to improve. I am obviously happy with today’s performance and result and it bodes well for the next games. We played against the Swiss at the qualifiers, they are a very interesting team and defend very well – their style is different to the Russian school, so we had to find ways to adjust.”

Hanna Klimets
Player of Belarus

"After one day of rest, we cleared our minds and we started to work together. Our game with middle blockers worked much better, they did a really good job and had a lot of points. And it helped us to win. It's the first step, we won our first match and we are really happy about it."

Hanna Davyskiba
outside hitter of Belarus

"We made a lot of mistakes and we didn't play in our rhythm, we just tried to adapt to their rhythm, but they were finding solutions quickly against our block and they made a lot of good points in attack. In the end they are a better team, but I think we have to take the best out of this loss and go for a win tomorrow."
