In theory, if Switzerland had managed to beat Italy, they could have caught the last train to Belgrade, but that unfortunately the underdogs could not fulfil their dream and cause what would have been a tremendous sensation. 

Although Italian coach Davide Mazzanti gave a chance to two players (Sara Bonifacio and Ofelia Malinov) who had not played in Zadar yet,  the rest of the team consisted of Alessia Gennari and Anna Danesi who had contested some of the previous games and, of course, Paola Egonu and Elena Pietrini plus libero Monica De Gennaro. The changes to the usual starting six did not affect their game. The Swiss girls gave their absolute best, they left it all on the court, but it just was not enough against the Italian superstars.

In the first set Italy had no problems, eventually celebrating a 25-17 win. In the second one, they relaxed considerably, and Switzerland managed to take the lead up to 10-4. At that stage, Italy woke up and responded swiftly, levelled the score at 15-15 and flew away. The set ended 25-18 in their favour.

Even though the Azzurre played better in the third than they had done in the second set, sometimes it seemed they played as much as they needed to, not more. They still broke away to lead 8-4, then 10-5. Switzerland stormed back to level the count at 11-11 and 16-16 and even had a set point, but Italy showed no mercy and closed the match in three sets (27-25).
