Match Report

Another staight-set victory for Turkey

Article

Day 5 started in incredible fashion in BTarena from Cluj-Napoca. The first set of the game between group favourites Turkey and feel-good story Sweden has been extremely tense. After a strong start by Turkey, whose offensive plays have been on point, Isabelle HAAK has started to show her skills once again, being her team’s main asset. (best attacker & 9 points to her name). Sweden reached optimal tempo and recovered a 4 point deficit on the scoreboard to have a set point. The cat-and-mouse game then began, up until 30-29, when Meryem BOZ decided it’s time to close the set - block and set point.

In the 2nd set, Turkey showed no mercy in the start, just like in the first set. Sweden, however, do not want to let the game out of their hands and recover incredibly from 8-0. Point by point, Sweden closed the gap to Turkey, after some tactical changes, with Isabelle and Anna Haak leading them as always. The set is closed by team TUR, 25-21.

The third set had no story to tell, as the game continued in the same fashion as the previous 2 sets, with Turkey on the lead. With several changes in the roster, they tried to give more playing time to the other members of the squad. Sweden never found the rhythm from the first two sets and Turkey has shown why they are nicknamed "the sultans of the net". The winner of the Cousins Guidetti battle is Giovanni Guidetti, as Turkey wins the match 3-0.

İSMAİLOĞLU Meliha said that: "in the beginning we had problems scoring high points and the defence also did not work as intended. After that, our play improved and we managed to win in straight sets. With the Netherlands, the story is clearly going to be different but we are confident. I want to thank the Turkish fans in the venue, I was so happy to see them there."

After the match, Alexandra Lazic from SWE said that: "we were expecting a pretty tough match, Turkey came from Tokyo, so it was always going to be a hard match. We have learned a lot from this game and we pushed them really hard in the first set. I am really excited for tomorrow, we need to reload now and push the battle because the next game is going to give us the chance to go further in the competition."
