Sweden’s dream run ends after a straight-sets loss to The Netherlands

Article 31 August 2021

Sweden’s EuroVolley 2021 Women dream run came to an end at the hands of The Netherlands. In a tense quarterfinal in Plovdiv the Dutch won in straight sets to progress to the Semi Finals for the third time in last four EuroVolley Women editions.

● In a back and forth opening set The Netherlands went on a 5-0 run to lead 22-19 only to squander three set points. However on the fourth a spike error by Isabelle Haak stave off the Swedish comeback challenge.

● Another spike error by Haak proved decisive in the second set. It came after a 27-seconds long rally to give Dutch a six-point advantage. The Netherlands took advantage of opponents’ eight errors (five of them on spikes) to win the set 25-16.

● Neither team could sustain high level of play long enough in the third as a spike error by Elles Damberink gave Sweden a 16-15 lead. However four consecutive points for The Netherlands put an end to the contest.

● Isabelle Haak led all scorers with 18 points. Nika Dalderop finished with 16 for The Netherlands while Juliet Lohuis added 11 including a couple of aces.

“It was our sixth match of the tournament and we’ve already beaten Sweden. The pressure was on us after two days of rest. It is such an amazing experience to play so young in the national team. Now we go to the final four hoping for a medal.”

Elles Dambrink
Opposite, The Netherlands

“Sweden is on a way up, they got a big confidence boost after beating Bulgaria. They have an outstanding player in Haak with good supporting cast that can play defense. It’s hard to beat the same team twice in the tournament. We have a new team with many youngsters in it. We are very happy to get the experience of playing in the final four of EuroVolley 2021. Hopefully we can play free and will see how far we can go.”

Avital Selinger
Head Coach, The Netherlands

”It's been a really fantastic journey for us. Of course, today it's hard to say exactly how amazing it was for us, because we lost 0-3. But after a few days of rest we will completely understand what we have done. I really couldn't wish for a better tournament. In the beginning we thought we are close to another unbelievable night, we were close to them, but after we lost by such a small margin, it was like our energy went out. But until the very last point we still fight like we always do.”
