Spain outlast Greece for first #EuroVolleyW win

Article

Spain beat Greece, surviving a 5-set thriller to get their first win at #EuroVolleyW 2021 in the most competitive match in Pool B in Plovdiv so far.

⦁ Although Greece got in the match showing better skills on block and serve, team Spain performed greater on attack (48% on winning spikes) and made less mistakes. 5 points scored by Raquel Montoro helped her squad to win the first set.

⦁ The Spanish joy didn't last long as Greece tied the set score although the opponent didn't give up easily. The Greek block was again better. 2 kill blocks by each Anthi Vasilantonaki and Konstantina Vlachaki out of 7 points both individually scored made the team of the Balkans dream hard about their first EuroVolley 2021 win.

⦁ However, Las Leonas seemed to be more motivated in the third set and with 14 winning spikes got closer to the victory.

⦁ Hellas had not said their final word. Anthi Vasilantonaki was again on fire and won the personal "best scorer" battle with the Spaniard Montoro in the most competitive set in the game so far. Greece triumphed to ensure the first 5-set Pool B match ever.

⦁ Keeping on with the winning energy, it was not much of an effort for the Greeks to quickly advanced in the decisive set 8-3. However, from then on, the teams switched roles and Spain became the leader on the court scoring 8 points in a row. The team coached by Pascual Saurin continued steadily and despite losing 3 set points at 11-14 recorded their first #EuroVolleyW 2021 victory.

⦁ The excellence demonstrated by Anthi Vasilantonaki who become the top scorer of the match with 30 points turned to be not enough for Greece's success. On the other side of the net, Raquel Montoro delivered best for Spain finishing with 22 points.

"It was a very emotional game. We started well, then we hesitated a bit, but we managed to stabilize in the end and win. We still have a chance to advance. We have matches with strong opponents, but the chances remain."

Lucrecia Castellano
Middle blocker, Spain

“Today we didn’t show our best performance. Spain played much better than in the two qualifying matches especially in block and reception. In the tiebreak at 8-3 our reception broke down, we couldn’t organize a single attack. It doesn’t matter how many points I’ve scored, team success is above all. We are tired now but even if our bodies won’t, our heads will be strong tomorrow against Czech Republic.”
